This policy explains what personal information Know Your Quote collects when you visit our website, why we collect it, who we share it with and what choices you have. We keep data collection to a minimum: we don’t ask you to create an account, and we don’t sell personal information.

Who we are
Know Your Quote is an independent publisher of home heating, cooling and hot water cost guides for Canada. In this policy, “we”, “us” and “our” mean the publisher of this website.
What information we collect
Information collected automatically. When you visit the site, our web hosting provider’s servers and our analytics tool receive technical information from your browser, such as your IP address, the pages you view, the date and time of your visit, the page that referred you, your browser type and device type, and your approximate location, which is derived from your IP address. We don’t ask you for your name, address or any other identifying detail to read our pages.
Information you give us. We don’t currently offer accounts, comments or a newsletter. If you contact us, we receive the information you choose to send, such as your email address and your message.
How we use it
We use this information to:
- show you the pages you request and keep the site secure and working;
- understand how people use the site, which pages are useful and which need improvement;
- display advertising, which helps pay for the site; and
- reply to you if you contact us.
We don’t use it to build profiles of individual visitors ourselves, and we don’t sell it.
Cookies and similar technologies
Cookies are small files stored on your device. The site and the services we use rely on them in these ways:
- Essential cookies. Needed for the site to work and stay secure.
- Analytics cookies. We use Google Analytics, a service of Google, to measure how visitors use the site, for example which pages are viewed and how people arrive. Google Analytics sets cookies and receives the technical information described above. You can prevent Google Analytics from collecting your data by installing the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
- Advertising cookies. Our advertising partners, including Google, use cookies and similar identifiers, described below.
You can also control cookies in your browser settings, including blocking or deleting them. Some parts of the site may not work as expected if you block all cookies.
Advertising
We show ads through Google AdSense and may work with other advertising providers in the future. Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and to other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to our site and other sites on the internet.
You can learn how Google uses information from sites that use its services on Google’s partner sites page. You can opt out of personalized advertising in Google’s Ads Settings. You can also opt out of interest-based advertising from many other participating companies using AdChoices in Canada or the WebChoices tool.
Opting out doesn’t remove ads from the site. You will still see ads, but they won’t be based on your interests as inferred from your browsing. We don’t control the cookies set by advertisers, and each provider’s own privacy policy describes how it handles your information.
Who we share information with
We share information only with service providers that help us run the site, and only as needed for those services:
- our web hosting provider, which stores and serves the site and keeps server logs;
- Google, for analytics (Google Analytics) and advertising (Google AdSense); and
- other advertising providers we may add in the future, which we will list on this page.
We may also disclose information if the law requires it. We don’t sell your personal information.
Where information is processed
Our service providers, including Google and our hosting provider, may store and process information in other countries, including the United States, where it may be accessible to courts, law enforcement and national security authorities under local law.
How long we keep it
We keep server logs and analytics data only for as long as we need them for the purposes above. We keep any messages you send us for as long as needed to reply and to handle follow-up, and then delete them.
Your choices and rights
Under Canadian privacy law, you may ask to see the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, withdraw your consent to our using it and ask questions about how we handle it. To make a request, contact us using the details in this policy. We will respond within a reasonable time.
If you aren’t satisfied with how we have handled your information, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, or to the privacy regulator in your province or territory.
Children
This site is meant for adults making decisions about their homes. We don’t knowingly collect personal information from children.
Security
We take reasonable steps to protect the information we handle, but no website or internet transmission is completely secure.
Links to other websites
Our pages link to other websites, such as government agencies and utilities. We aren’t responsible for their privacy practices, so please read their policies before you give them information.
Changes to this policy
We update this policy when our practices change, and we show the date of the latest update at the top of this page. If a change is significant, we will say so on the site.
