About Know Your Quote

Know Your Quote is an independent guide to what heating, cooling and hot water work costs for homes in Canada. We publish price ranges in Canadian dollars, built from at least three independent sources and dated with the month we checked them, so you can compare any quote you receive with what the market looks like.

Last reviewed: October 2026.

Why we exist

Replacing a furnace, adding a heat pump or swapping a hot water tank costs thousands of dollars, and it often happens in a hurry when something stops working. Search for what these jobs cost and most of the top results come from companies that sell the equipment or the installation, or from guides written for another country’s market.

Know Your Quote is the version without a sales pitch. It doesn’t sell equipment, doesn’t install anything and doesn’t take payment from contractors, manufacturers or utilities to appear on the site.

What you’ll find here

  • Cost guides for furnaces, heat pumps, central air conditioners, hot water tanks and related work, with price ranges and what’s usually included.
  • Local pages for provinces and cities, built from local installer prices, local gas and electricity rates and local climate data.
  • Comparisons and explainers that help you decide between options, such as a heat pump and a furnace, and understand the terms on a quote.

How we work

Every price range follows our published methodology: we need at least three independent sources, we show the currency, tax status and what’s included, and we date every figure. We recheck our ranges every quarter. Our editorial policy explains how we write and check our pages and what we won’t do.

Who’s behind Know Your Quote

Know Your Quote is researched and edited by Gabriel Reyes, a content and SEO analyst. Gabriel isn’t an HVAC technician or a contractor. His work on this site is research and editing: finding the prices Canadian businesses publish, checking each range against our three-source rule, and making sure every page says what a figure includes and when it was last verified. He has no business relationship with any installer, manufacturer, retailer, utility or rental company.

We research remotely and aren’t based in Canada. That’s why we rely only on prices published by Canadian businesses and on official Canadian sources, and why every figure on the site links back to where it came from.

How the site is funded

Know Your Quote earns money from advertising displayed on the site. Advertisers don’t influence what we write or the price ranges we publish, and we don’t recommend specific contractors.

Before you use our ranges

We’re researchers, so we can’t inspect your home or quote a job. Our price ranges show what installers charge across the market; your quote shows what your home needs. Use our guides to prepare, then get written quotes from licensed contractors near you.
